Cheyne Johnston, father of two, had a severe traumatic brain injury suffered in a motorcycle accident on April 27th 2014. Since then he's been fighting an amazing battle to recover.
Our goal is to provide financial, emotional and physical support to Cheyne and others like him in our community who find themselves in need and have nowhere else to turn for help with dealing with a traumatic brain injury. We would like to specifically address the needs of the most severe end of the TBI spectrum as there is little to no help or research available for these patients. 90% of people who suffer a diffuse axonal injury (DAI) like Cheyne die from their injury and the other 10 % who do survive never get beyond a vegetative state. Cheyne is unique in his survival/ recovery. Each brain injury is unique and therefore requires massive amounts of creativity, persistence, time, understanding and patience in finding and implementing what will help each individual patient. Our foundation also provides programs to assist families new to TBI (our ICU Comfort Bag Program with Scripps Memorial Hospital, La Jolla) as well as to educate others (our new Caregiving/ TBI: A Dynamic Healing Process Seminars). We will also provide funding to uniquely qualified and talented people to work in the field of brain injury and we want to be instrumental in inspiring and financially supporting their career choice from an impacted family’s perspective.
